Washington, D.C., September 14, 2005— American Tort Reform Association President Sherman Joyce issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives today passing by a voice vote the “Katrina Volunteer Protection Act of 2005.”

“We commend the U.S. House for passing this important legislation that will protect from liability those who want to assist the thousands of people devastated by Hurricane Katrina and volunteer organizations that help coordinate those efforts. Volunteers should not be influenced by fear of liability. We applaud Representative Sensenbrenner for introducing this legislation.”
