Opinions/Editorials on the Case for Legal Reform

Letter to the Florida Senate

from Florida Justice Reform Institute and fellow Floridians

May 2, 2005

On behalf of the Florida Justice Reform Institute and its affiliated organizations, we urge you to adopt strong versions of the many civil justice reform bills now coming before you in the closing days of this Session as you work toward agreement with your colleagues in the House.

The Florida Justice Reform Institute supports the common-sense legal reforms advanced by HB 1513 (Civil Justice Reform), HB 1019 (Asbestos), HB 1925 (Class Action), HB 1931 (Premises Liability), SB 2002 (Sovereign Immunity), and HB 135 (Street Lights).  These bills have all received due deliberation in committee, and will advance good public policy for the benefit of all Floridians.

The Florida Justice Reform Institute commends all the legislators who have proven their commitment to enacting real civil justice reforms, and will be working year-round to ensure their support is remembered.  Political activism is central to the long-term mission of the Florida Justice Reform Institute, and we are aggressively raising money and supporting leaders who are working to change a system that fills the pockets of trial lawyers while leaving real victims without the compensation they deserve.

In the coming years, FJRI will be backing candidates for executive, legislative and judicial offices who will help change the system of broken justice that is handicapping our state’s economy.  We recognize that there are vested interests who are seeking to preserve the status quo because they benefit from the multibillion-dollar lawsuit industry in America.  FJRI was formed to counter these well-heeled interests and restore fairness, predictability, and personal responsibility to our courts.

Sincerely,
