Mississippi’s Legal Reform Helps to Attract New Toyota Investment

WASHINGTON, DC, February 28, 2007 – National Association of Manufacturers President John Engler today welcomed the announcement by Toyota North America that it is planning to construct a new $1.3 billion assembly plant in Tupelo, Mississippi. The new facility is expected to come on line in 2010. It will be the eighth Toyota assembly plant in the U.S.

Engler commended Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour for creating an economic climate receptive to investments like the new Toyota plant. “Haley knows what it takes to attract business investment,” Engler said. “He has tackled the tough issues, such as legal reform, and the result is 2,000 more jobs for the people of Mississippi. He deserves a lot of credit for winning the competition that led to today’s major announcement.”

This new decision by Toyota underscores the progress Mississippi has made in reforming the state's legal climate to achieve fairness for both consumers and business. In 2004, Toyota decided against building a plant in Mississippi then because of the poor legal climate that existed before major reforms were enacted in 2004 by the Barbour Administration.

ATRA Releases Judicial Hellholes 2005

(Courtesy ATRA) The fourth annual "Judicial Hellholes®" report, a ranking of the worst courts in the United States, was released earlier this week by the American Tort Reform Association.

The overwhelming majority of state courts dispense justice in a fair and impartial manner. By way of contrast, Judicial Hellholes are a few, but powerful, courts that have a disproportionately harmful impact on civil litigation. Litigation tourists, who neither lived nor were injured in these jurisdictions, are guided by their personal injury lawyers who seek out these places because they know they will produce a positive outcome, an excessive verdict or settlement, a favorable precedent, or both. This is venue shopping run wild.

"It is possible to quench the fires in Judicial Hellholes with the help of judges, legislators, the electorate and the media," said Sherman Joyce, President of the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA). "By shining the spotlight on the abuses in these jurisdictions, Judicial Hellholes can become fair courts.”
