History was made in the November 2006
general elections, which resulted in a tie between Republicans and
Democrats in the State Senate—a first since statehood. As part of
a power-sharing agreement between the two caucuses, Senator Coffee was
elected as Oklahoma’s first Co President Pro Tempore of the Senate, with
members of both parties sharing equally in the day-to-day management of
the chamber and co-chairing all committees. The agreement also called
for Senator Coffee to have the title of Pro Tempore of the Senate during
July, 2007, the first Republican to hold this office in state history.
In 2005, then-Senate
Minority Leader Glenn Coffee was been a strong advocate of legal reform
in Oklahoma and played a key role in the almost-successful effort in
2005 to pass comprehensive legal reform in the Senate. (The bill
was voted down along party lines by a 26-22 vote.)
In this interview with AJP, Senator Coffee says that it is vital for
legislators and other government officials to hear from business people
in support of legal reform measures.
First elected to the State Senate in 1998, Coffee quickly gained a
reputation as an up and coming leader, passing legislation to better
protect the public against sex offenders and end inconvenient and
outdated requirements on vehicle inspections. He was re-elected without
opposition in 2002 and the following session helped protect Oklahoma
consumers by passing legislation helping them fight back against
unwanted computer spam. The District 30 Senator serves on both the
Appropriations Subcommittee and Standing Committee on Education,
Aerospace, Communications and Technology, Finance, Rules and the Tourism
and Wildlife Committees. He also serves as Republican Floor Leader for
the Senate.
Senator Coffee received his undergraduate degree in Political Science
from Northeastern State University in 1989 and was named Outstanding
Senior. He received his law degree from the University of Oklahoma
College of Law in 1992.
Senator
Coffee is a member of the Oklahoma County, State and American Bar
Associations. He is an active member of Leadership Oklahoma, Leadership
OKC Fast Track and the NSU Alumni Association. Recent honors include
NSU’s 2003 Citation of Merit, Young Alumnus award. In addition, Senator
Coffee was selected for membership in Durocher’s “Forty Under 40” for
2003. The group includes individuals recognized as being among the most
influential young business and community leaders in the Oklahoma City
metro area.
He is currently a member of Phillips, McFall, McCaffrey, McVay & Murrah
Law Firm and specializes in the areas of business, commercial and
electronic commerce law.
