Leonard Leo Biography
Leonard A. Leo serves
as the Executive Vice President of
The Federalist Society for Law &
Public Policy Studies, an organization of
conservatives and libertarians dedicated to traditional legal principles
and interested in the current state of the legal order. In that
capacity, Mr. Leo manages the projects, programs and publications of a
nationwide network of about 35,000 lawyers. He also directs the
Federalist Society's government and media relations and its ABA WATCH
project, which is aimed at monitoring the work and activities of the
American Bar Association.
Before joining the Federalist Society, Mr. Leo served as a law clerk to
Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C.
Circuit and to Judge Randall Rader of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
He also briefly worked as an associate attorney in the New Jersey law
firm of Sills Beck, specializing in gaming law, casino regulation, and
other aspects of the firm's regulatory and general litigation practice.
An active participant in the affairs of the bar, Mr. Leo serves as an
officer of the American Bar Association's Section of Administrative Law.
He also has acted as a consultant on a number of legislative and
litigation projects involving banking regulation, property rights,
discrimination law, judicial selection, regulatory reform, federalism,
and freedom of speech. He has published articles on presidential war
powers, executive privilege, legislative responses to judicial activism,
casino regulation, takings, and several federal civil procedure issues.
He also served as co-editor of the book Presidential Leadership: Rating
the Best and the Worst in the White House, released by Simon & Schuster
in May, 2004.
Mr. Leo received his law degree with honors from Cornell Law School in
1989 and his undergraduate degree with high honors from Cornell
University in 1987. He is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, D.C.
Circuit, Federal Circuit, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey Bars.
Since May of 2002, Mr. Leo has been a member of the Sovereign Military
Order of Malta, an organization that emphasizes, as a centerpiece of its
work, the provision of services to ill and disabled members of the
community who are most in need. He also serves on the Boards of
Directors of the Youth Leadership Foundation, the National Catholic
Prayer Breakfast, and the Catholic Action Network. He resides in
Arlington with his wife Sally and their four children—Margaret, Anthony,
Elizabeth, and Thaddeus.
