Bush Deputy Chief of Staff Tapped to Lead

Florida Justice Reform Institute

William Large selected by FJRI’s board of directors to lead charge toward common sense justice reforms

Sept. 7, 2005  Tallahassee, FL. – The Florida Justice Reform Institute (FJRI) will continue its aggressive pursuit of judicial fairness and balance under the leadership of its newly selected president, William Large, former deputy chief of staff to Gov. Jeb Bush.

FJRI is Florida’s leading organization committed to meaningful and long-term legal reforms that will benefit all Floridians. The organization will benefit from Large’s extensive experience in legal reform issues.

Large will begin leading FJRI Monday, Sept. 12. Before becoming a deputy chief of staff, Large served as one of Bush’s chief counselors as lawmakers negotiated reforms of the state’s medical malpractice laws. As the Department of Health’s general counsel from March 2000 until June 2004 and director of the Governor’s Task Force on Healthcare Professional Liability Insurance, Large played a vital role in ensuring the Governor’s medical malpractice reform initiatives were approved by the Florida Legislature.        Read Full Story

The Florida Chamber of Commerce has announced the creation of The Florida Justice Reform Institute, as a separate, single-purpose entity to focus solely on championing all aspects of meaningful civil justice reform.

FJRI is an independent coalition of business, medical and consumer advocates led by some of the state's top CEOs.

The Institute will leverage “best practices” and intelligence from other states (Michigan, Illinois, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama and others) where significant legal reform efforts have taken place.   The Institute is open to all who are interested in working collaboratively.

To this end, it has already built a state and national network of fundraising, resources, lobbyists, attorneys and experience to make this low-governance, high impact program successful in the next session and next decade.

FJRI has begun airing the first 30-second TV spot, entitled "In the Name of Justice", on Meet the Press, Face the Nation, 60 Minutes, The Usual Suspects, and other broadcast and cable programs. This inaugural commercial is complemented by a 60-second radio spot entitled "For the Sake of Justice" and a full-page ad in the Tallahassee Democrat. Additional media markets will be rolled out as well.  Watch FJRI Television commercial and listen to Radio commercial.

"We are taking our message from the courtroom to the court of public opinion because lawsuit abuse is hurting our small businesses, our access to healthcare and real victims, affecting everyone with higher costs and greater uncertainty," FJRI Executive Director Pam Philp says. "It's a legal lottery that's painted a bulls-eye on the state of Florida, and everyone who lives here."
